Wayang Kulit / Leather Puppet Shadow Play

Those who are interested in leather puppet shadow plays can see them in:

  • Agastya Art Institute—School for Narrators, Jalan Gedung Kiwo MJ I, performed everyday save for Sunday from 3 – 5 pm.
  • Sasana Hinggil—
    South Palace Square
    (Alun-Alun Selatan), performed every second Saturday of the month from 9 pm to 5.30 am.

 

Wayang Golek / Wooden Puppets

You can view wayang golek performances in Agastya Art Institute—School for Narrators, Jalan Gedung Kiwo MJ I, performed every Saturday from 3 - 5 pm. At Nitour Inc. Jalan KH A. Dahlan 71, it is performed every day except Sunday from 11 am – 1 pm.

 

Wayang Orang / Dance Drama

The performance is held in Hotel Arjuna Plaza, Jalan P. Mangkubumi, every Thursday from 7 – 9 pm.

 

Ramayana Ballet

Unique and famous, this ballet is presented by 250 professional dancers at the open air theatre of Prambanan / Loro Jonggrang temple. The entire Ramayana epics is concised into 4 (four) episodes. Each night, one episode, and presented from 7.30 to 9.30 pm.

  • At Ramayana Open Air Theatre, Prambanan Temple, this ballet is performed on moonlight in May to Octover from 7.30 – 9.30 pm.
  • At Pura Wisata Open Air Theatre, Jalan Brigjen Katamso, performed every night from 8 – 9.30 pm.
  • At Dalem Pujokusuman, performed every Monday and Friday from 8 – 9.30 pm.

 

Jatilan Kuda Lumping
Bamboo horse dance, at Desa Wisata Bugisan, Prambanan. Bookings must be made at least two hours in advance if you want to watch this show.

 

Surabaya, East Java

Reog Ponorogo

Performances where the dancers carry a very heavy, ornamented tiger head with peacock feathers. This dance depicts a fight between a tiger and two noblemen on horseback.

 

Kerapan Sapi (Bull Races), Madura
This is very popular sport and spectacle is held regularly at least twice a month at Bangkalan on the island of Madura, about half an hour by ferry from Surabaya. Bull racing is a great event in Madura especially the annual races for the islands championship which are usually held by the local administration after the harvest time in September and October. The finals are held at Pamekasan capital of the island, once a year. Special races can be organized, given three days advance notice.

 

Kuda Kepang (Bamboo Horse), Kediri
A dance performance originating from the town of Kediri. Male dances falling into a trance ride on bamboo horses, and eat grass flowers, rice husks and pieces of glass.

 

 Semarang , Central Java

 

Wayang Kulit / Leather Puppet Shadow Show

The show is held at RRI Semarang, Jalan Achmad Yani, from 9 pm – 5 am the following morning at the third week of each month on Saturday night. The plays are based on some episodes of Ramayana and Mahabharata epics.

Traditional Sundanese Dances
Pakuan Restaurant of Hotel Panghegar, Jalan Asia Afrika at night from 8 pm till midnight and at?Mang Udjo, Jalan Padasuka, from 2 ? 5 pm (phone: 62-22-7201587) are the hosts of Sundanese traditional dances and music.

 

Wayang Golek/Wooden Puppets
Performed at RRI Auditorium, Jalan Diponegoro 61, every Saturday night from 1 - 5 am. Wooden puppets are made of wood and are quite three-dimensional, unlike the thin puppets made of leather.

 

Gotong Sisingaan
A traditional art festival, wooden effigies of lions in colorful decoration carried out by many people. This art is often performed art circumcision or other ceremonies on request.
