Bali is one of the few places on earth where ordinary people still strive to maintain a harmonious balance between the physical and methaphysical. Maintaining a balance is done by daily ritual, gracefully and with ease.
Balinese New year, the day of total silence throughout the island, a day of absolute silence thrrought out the island when no activity takes place, no traffic is seen anywhere, no fire is lit.
Nyepi is a day reserved for self-reflection and as such, anything that might interfere with that pupose is restricted. The main restrictions are; no lighting fires (and light must be kept low), no working, no entertainment or pleasure, no traveling, and for some no talking or eating at all. Although Nyepi is primarily a Hindu holiday, non-Hindu residents of Bali observe the day of silence as well, out of respect for their fellow citizens.
